Notes: It's no surprise that the Bengals failed to reach the playoffs. They had a middle-of-the-road year finishing with an 8-8 record. Their season average of 95.96 was in the high yellow indicator zone but just shy of the green zone. With just a little improvement in their offensive performance in 2007, the Bengals may well return to the playoffs and become serious contenders.

It is interesting to note their games in week 7 and week 10. In week 7, the Bengals were all green, earned 120 offensive PossessionPoints and won the game even though they scored only 17 points. In week 10, they scored 122 offensive PossessionPoints, but were negative in the net effect and in the red in the defensive effect.  Despite putting 41 points on the scoreboard, they lost. These games demonstrate how PossessionPoints and the Indicator effects tell the true story of the game that other conventional stats don't. While PossessionPoints isn't going to point out every instance where the indicator effects proved more valuable than other commonly known information, we thought these games were a clear example of the many that exist.

Looking ahead to 2007, PossessionPoints indicates that the Bengals need more in the way of defensive help. Their 2007 draft addressed both offense and defense with just about an even number of picks. Their number 1 pick was on the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Leon Hall, out of Michigan. We will need to watch the early performances of the Bengals to get a feel for 2007. It is yet to be determined how various suspensions and other disciplinary actions will effect the Bengals.
